Schniederjans Extends Trip Abroad

July 2, 2014

THE FLATS – Ollie Schniederjans’ sojourn to the United Kingdom got significantly longer this week when he was offered an exemption into the Scottish Open, which will be played July 10-13 in Aberdeen, the week prior to The Open Championship at Hoylake. England.

The rising Tech senior went 3-1 last weekend for the United States in the Palmer Cup, but his singles victory Sunday wasn’t enough to keep the Europeans from winning 8.5 of 10 points and capture the cup, 18.5-11.5. He then moved over to Sunningdale, England Tuesday to attempt to qualify for The Open Championship, but shot 78-71 and finished 33rd.

Schniederjans’ next decision after accepting the exemption was what to do with the week between Tuesday and the Scottish Open, which he will spend visiting London before traveling to Scotland to practice and prepare.

Ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Schniederjans joins several Americans entered into the Scottish Open, among them PGA Tour pros Phil Mickelson, Ryan Palmer, Kevin Stadler and Jimmy Walker.

FOUR JACKETS IN THE FIELD FOR THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Past champions David Duval (2001) and Stewart Cink (2009) are in the field along with seven-time PGA tour winner Matt Kuchar and Roberto Castro for The Open Championship which will be contested at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England on July 17-20.

Kuchar and Castro qualified based on advancing to the Tour Championship last season at East Lake Golf Club and finishing among the top 30 in the FedEx Cup points standings.

Castro is among six Georgia Tech alumni competing in this week’s Greenbrier Classic in White Sulfur Springs, W.Va., joining Chesson Hadley, Troy Matteson, Bryce Molder, Nicholas Thompson and Cameron Tringale.

This event, along with next week’s John Deere Classic, are part of a qualifying series that will grant five spots in The Open Championship to players not otherwise exempt into the season’s third major. At the Greenbrier Classic, the top four players not already exempt for The Open who finish among the top 12 and ties will gain entry into the Open Championship. The top finisher at the John Deere Classic who is not yet exempt for The Open will earn a spot, as long as he also finishes in the top five at the Deere.

SCHNIEDERJANS, REEVES EXEMPT INTO U.S. AMATEUR

Ollie Schniederjans, as the No. 1 amateur in the World, and Seth Reeves, who is No. 26, are automatically exempt into the 2014 United States Amateur Championship, which will be contested Aug. 11-17, at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Ga. The top 50 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at the close of entries (June 25) for the U.S. Amateur are automatically granted a berth.

Both players will participate in a media day for the event on July 29 at the Athletic Club.

Other members of Tech’s current team and a couple of alumni will attempt to gain entry into the U.S. Amateur at various qualifying tournaments taking place around the country between July 7-22.

Two qualifiers will be held in Georgia, July 15-16 at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta (Anders Albertson, Drew Czuchry, Michael Pisciotta entered) and July 21-22 at Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation in Eatonton, Ga. (Bo Andrews, Carlton Forrester, Vincent Whaley).

AMATEUR ROUND-UP

Four Yellow Jackets made the cut at last weekend’s Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. Anders Albertson challenged for the title after firing a 64 in the third round and wound up finishing fourth with a 19-under-par total of 269. Seth Reeves tied for 12th at 12-under 276, while Vincent Whaley shot a closing 66 to tie for 19th at 10-under-par 278. Incoming freshman Chris Petefish tied for 34th at 5-under 283.

Petefish is the only Tech player competing this week, entered at the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. The North & South consists of three rounds of stroke play, after which the top 16 finishers are bracketed for match play. The Danville, Calif., native has shot 70-70 in the first two rounds of stroke play and is two shots off the lead and four shots ahead of the cutline headed into Thursday’s final round.
