@GT_Golf - #ProJackets Update

April 7, 2015

THE FLATS – Three former Georgia Tech golfers – Matt Kuchar, Larry Mize and Cameron Tringale – are in the field for the Masters Tournament, the first major championship of 2015, this week at Augusta National Golf Club.

Mize, who won the 1987 Masters in dramatic fashion with a chip-in on the 11th hole during a sudden-death playoff with Greg Norman, is playing in the tournament for the 32nd time, and made his 18th cut just last year, finishing in 51st place.

Kuchar is playing in his eighth Masters, having made the cut in seven of his previous eight appearances. The 2000 Tech graduate has finished in the top 10 each of the last three years, including a tie for fifth last year.

Tringale, who tied for fifth last weekend at the Shell Houston Open, is competing in his first Masters after reaching the Tour Championship last year and finishing in a tie for 15th place.

Georgia Tech alumni who have competed in the Masters date all the way back to the tournament’s founding in 1934 with Bobby Jones and his contemporary, Charlie Yates. Mize, who played at Tech in the late 1970s and won the Masters at the age of 28, is one of four Tech golfers to win major championships in today’s Grand Slam. Other Yellow Jacket golfers to play in the Masters include Charlie Harrison, David Duval, Stewart Cink, Troy Matteson and Roberto Castro.

Last weekend, four Yellow Jackets made the cut at the Shell Houston Open, led by Tringale, who stormed into the top five on Sunday and finished at 13-under-par 275 after rounds of 68-70-69-68. He advanced to 62nd in the FedEx Cup rankings. Cink and Chesson Hadley tied for 50th place at 5-under 283, while Kuchar tied for 70th place after opening with a 67 and finishing with a 78. Nicholas Thompson and Bryce Molder failed to make the cut.

Castro and Richard Werenski both made the cut at the Web.com Tour Louisiana Open, Castro (-5) tying for 50th place and Werenski (even par) tying for 71st. Matt Weibring missed the cut.

Bo Andrews started off well at last weekend’s Championship at St. James Plantation on the eGolf Tour, shooting 72-72 in the opening two rounds to make the cut, but tailing off with a 78-76 on the weekend to tie for 27th.

James White (T-15th) and Seth Reeves (T-32nd) both made the cut at the SwingThought.com Tour’s Lake County Classic.
