#ProJackets Golf Update

Oct. 6, 2015

THE FLATS – Matt Kuchar is on the United States team for this week’s Presidents Cup, a biennial competition between the United States and an International team composed of the top professional players from around the world outside of Europe. Kuchar is a member of the USA team for the third straight year, qualifying for the squad on points. He and Tiger Woods paired for foursomes and four-ball matches in 2013, winning three times.

The Presidents Cup is being contested at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon City, Korea. The United States has won the last seven Cups, dating back to 2000, and a Georgia Tech player has been on the USA team for every Presidents Cup since 1998, with one exception (2003). David Duval competed in 1998 and 2000, Stewart Cink in 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2009, and Matt Kuchar in 2011 and 2013.

Kuchar joins a United states team that includes Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Jimmy Walker, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Chris Kirk, J.B.Holmes, Bill Haas and PhilMickelson

PGA Tour: The fall segment of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season begins in two weeks, and Ollie Schniederjans has received exemptions into three events – the Frys.com Open Oct. 15-18 in Napa,Calif., the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nev., and the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss. The fall series includes seven events, ending Nov. 19-22 with the McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Ga.

Web.com TourRoberto Castro regained a measure of PGA Tour status with his fifth-place finish in the Web.com Tour Finals. The 2007 Tech graduate played mostly on sponsor exemptions last year but accumulated enough FedEx Cup points to make the Web.com Finals, where he tied for ninth, second and 10th in the final three events of the four-tournament series. Last weekend, Castro closed with a 62 (-8) and tied for 10th at the Web.com Tour Championship.

Castro’s 62 gave him the course record at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass. He already owns the course record at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass with a 63 in the opening round of The Players Championship in 2013.

Nicholas Thompson enjoyed a solid performance in the Web.com Tour Championship (T24), but finished the Finals in 76th place in earnings.

Web.com Tour Q-School – The first stage of the Web.com Tour Q-School begins this week at four different sites, including Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., where Anders Albertson, Bo Andrews, Drew Czuchry, Kyle Scott and James White are competing. Follow results here.

Seth Reeves is in the field for the first-stage competition Oct. 13-16 at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Ala.

Richard Werenski, who finished 79th in the Web.com Tour regular-season money list, is exempt into the final stage of Q-School, Dec. 10-15 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Matt Weibring, who finished 87th in the regular-season earnings list, is exempt into the second stage, which is played Nov. 10-13 and Nov. 17-20 at five different sites.

European Tour – Stewart Cink played his second European Tour event in the last month, tying for ninth place at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with a 14-under-par score of 274, four shots off the pace and worth €82,856 … Ollie Schniederjans also played in the event but missed the cut … Bo Andrews played in the first stage of the European Tour Qualifying School in late September in Northampton, England but missed the 54-hole cut by two shots.

Amateur update – Former Tech player Mike Pearson (1996-99) qualified for this week’s United States Mid-Amateur Championship at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla. He tied for 54th place in the 36-hole stroke-play portion of the championship, qualifying for match play, then defeated Bryan Smith of Jay, Vt., 1-up, in the round of 64. Pearson lost 3&2 to Matt Sughrue of Arlington, Va., in the second round … Former U.S. Mid-Am finalist Carlton Forrester picked up his second victory in the prestigious Crump Cup Memorial Tournament, played since 1922 at Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, N.J.
