@GT_GOLF - #ProJackets Update

July 21, 2015

THE FLATS – With Ollie Schniederjans playing his final event as an amateur and leading the way, Georgia Tech had all five of its competitors make the cut at The Open Championship last weekend.

Schniederjans, who begins his professional career this week at the RBC Canadian Open, shot a closing 67 and reached 10-under-par for the championship at one point, settling into a tie for 12th at 9-under-par 279. He shot 70-72-70 in his first three rounds. It was a fitting finish to a stellar amateur career for the three-time All-American from Powder Springs, Ga., becoming only the third amateur since 1960, joining Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, to make the cut in both the U.S. Open (T42) and the Open Championship.

Only one downside – Schniederjans missed by one shot earning a return trip to the Open, which next year will be held at Royal Troon. The top 10 finishers plus ties earned an exemption into the next year’s championship.

Former Open champions Stewart Cink and David Duval enjoyed fine performances, Cink (2009) tying for 20th place at 7-under-par 281, and Duval (2001) tying got 49th at 4-under 284. Matt Kuchar and Cameron Tringale tied for 58th at 3-under 285.

The Open overshadowed the PGA Tour’s own event last weekend, the Barbasol Championship in Opelika, Ala., where another four former Jackets earned paychecks. Roberto Castro led the way, tying for 23rd place at 9-under 275, while Troy Matteson and Chesson Hadley tied for 39th place at 6-under 278. Thanks to his victory in the Big Break The Palm Beaches earlier this year, Richard Werenski was able to make his first career PGA Tour appearance at the Barbasol, where he made the cut and picked up a check for $6,825.

Castro surpassed $4 million in career earnings over the weekend, combining his PGA tour and Web.com Tour winnings. Bryce Molder did not play this weekend, but with his tie for 28th at the John Deere Classic two weeks ago, he surpassed $10 million in combined career earnings on the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour.

Castro is in the field for the RBC Canadian Open along with Schniederjans, Cink, Hadley and Thompson.
