THE FLATS – Five Georgia Tech alumni are among the top 125 in FedEx Cup points in the PGA Tour following last weekend’s Wyndham Championship and have secured their spots in the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin this week with The Barclays in Plainfield, N.J.
Matt Kuchar, ranked 26th in FedEx Cup points, would qualify to compete all the way through the season-ending Tour Championship if he maintains or improves his current standing. Also in the field for The Barclays are Cameron Tringale (57th), Chesson Hadley (83rd), Bryce Molder (92nd) and Stewart Cink (116th).
The top 100 individuals in Fed Ex Cup points after The Barclays advance to the second stage, the Deutsche Bank Championship, next week. The top 70 following Deutsche Bank compete in the BMW Championship Sept. 17-20, and the top 30 after the BMW come to Atlanta to play at East Lake Golf Club Sept. 24-27.
Only two of six Tech competitors made the cut at the Wyndham — Molder tied for 59th and Roberto Castro tied for 66th. Tech had one casualty following the Wyndham — Nicholas Thompson, who began the weekend at No. 123 in FedEx Cup points, missed the cut and fell to No. 131. Castro, with limited PGA Tour status this year, stands 188th in points and has qualified for the four-event Web.com Tour finals, which begins Sept. 10-13.
Champions Tour – Larry Mize posted his best finish of 2015 by tying for 18th place at the Boeing Championship in Seattle. Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, opened with a 67 to lead after 18 holes, and posted his fourth top-25 finish in 14 events this year. He ranks 70th in earnings on the Champions Tour.
Web.com Tour – Richard Werenski shot 13-under-par 271, including a third-round 63, and tied for 13th last weekend at the News Sentinel Open in Knoxville, Tenn., improving to 80th in Web.com Tour earnings for 2015. Matt Weibring missed the cut and slipped to 84th. With one event remaining, both need a top-10 finish in order to move into the top 75 and make the field for the Web.com Tour finals.
Ollie Schniederjans did not qualify for the Web.com Tour finals after missing the cut, by one stroke, at the Wyndham Championship. Schniederjans accumulated 99 FedEx Cup points in the four events PGA Tour he played, equivalent to No. 202 on the points list. He needed to be equivalent to the No. 200 position or higher in order to qualify for the Web.com finals. His next step will be to enter the Web.com Tour qualifying school in December, and he is allowed up to seven exemptions each into European Tour, PGA Tour and Web.com Tour events this fall and spring.
SwingThought.com – Anders Albertson (T9, -15), Seth Reeves (T24, -10), John-Tyler Griffin (T42, -6) and Bo Andrews (49th, -4) all earned money in last weekend’s Kandy Waters Memorial Classic in North Augusta, S.C. Albertson shot rounds of 70-66-66-67 and finished seven shots off the pace. Four events remain on the 2015 schedule.
