Tech Tied for 4th After Opening Round of NCAA Tallahassee Regional

May 16, 2013

Tallahassee, Fla. – Anders Albertson continued his recent hot streak by firing a 6-under-par 66, lifting Georgia Tech into a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional golf tournament.

In near perfect weather conditions Thursday at the 6,965-yard, par 72 Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club, Albertson turned in a bogey-free card and stands one shot off the pace set by MJ Maguire of North Florida (65). The Atlantic Coast Conference individual champion has broken 70 in seven of his last eight rounds.

But the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets, seeded second in this regional, find themselves in a bit of an uncomfortable position at the close of Thursday’s round after getting out of the chute quickly with an early lead. The top five teams at the conclusion of 54 holes Saturday will advance to play in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, which begins May 28 at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga. Tech is the host institution.

“The greens are good and the course isn’t overly long, so you’re going to have to have four guys shoot under par every day,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “That’s what it’s going to take on this golf course. Anders continues to play well, and Ollie had a chance to score well today. We’ll see.”

North Florida, ranked 19th nationally, grabbed the early lead by posting a 16-under-par 272, four shots clear of top-seeded and 6th-ranked Washington (12-under 276) and five ahead of third seed and 14th-ranked Florida State (11-under 277). Tech is tied with Oregon and South Florida at 8-under-par 280.

Wake Forest and Oklahoma are tied for seventh place at 4-under 284, the only other teams to break par Thursday.

Ollie Schniederjans shot a 2-under-par 70, while Bo Andrews added a 1-under 71 and Shun Yat Hak chipped in with a 1-over 73 for the Yellow Jackets in the opening round.
