April 20, 2012

New London, N.C. – On their first-ever trip around the Old North State Club, Bo Andrews and Ollie Schniederjans each carded 6-under-par 66 Friday, pacing 11th-ranked Georgia Tech to a 6-stroke lead after the first round of the 59th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

The Yellow Jackets, who have won the last three conference titles and five of the last six, bolted to a fine start in their defense of the 2011 crown, posting an 18-under-par total of 270, six shots clear of 20th-ranked Virginia, who shot a 12-under-par score of 276. Both teams are on pace to shatter the ACC Tournament record of 33-under-par set by the Jackets last spring on the 7,102-yard, par 72 layout at Uwharrie Point on Badin Lake.

Florida State, ranked 24th, got around the Old North State Club in 9-under-par 279, followed by North Carolina at 282 and Wake Forest at 285. Maryland and 21st-ranked Clemson are tied for sixth place at 1-under 287.

Andrews, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., played bogey free golf, posting four birdies and an eagle on his round Friday. Schniederjans, a freshman from Powder Springs, Ga., have five birdies and an eagle in his round. They are tied for first place individually with the Seminoles’ Daniel Berger. Wake Forest’s Lee Bedford and the Cavaliers’ Ben Kohles and Ben Rusch are tied for fourth at 67, one shot back.

“Obviously we’re very happy to have started out so well,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “Everybody was in the round all day long. Ollie and Bo have been working extremely hard, and it was awesome to see both of them experience some positive results. The course is in perfect shape, and we will need to continue to make birdies out here tomorrow and Sunday.”

The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their 13 ACC titles at Old North State. Play continues at 8:30 Saturday and Sunday. Live web streaming will be available for free on Saturday, April 21 (1:30 p.m. to conclusion of play) and Sunday, April 22 (1:30 p.m. to conclusion of play) on theACC.com.

Freshman Anders Albertson and sophomore Richard Werenski, who tied for 21st place last year, each shot 69. All-American James White didn’t count for the Jackets on Friday despite shooting 2-under-par 70. After an eagle at the first hole and four straight birdies on 4 through 7, the senior from Acworth, Ga., stumbled with a triple-bogey at the eighth hole and a double-bogey at No. 10. But he played the final eight holes in 2-under-par.
