Nicholas Thompson posted the second top-10 finish for a Georgia Tech alumnus on the fall portion of the PGA Tour schedule last weekend, tying for ninth place at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa del Carman, Mexico.
The 2005 Tech graduate shot a closing 69 Sunday to finish at 11-under-par 273, six shots behind the winning total of Charley Hoffman. He improved his season earnings to more than $138,000 and ranks 27th in FedEx Cup points.
Meanwhile, two former Tech stars advanced to the final stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying School last weekend.
Richard Werenski, who graduated last spring and won three pro titles over the summer, finished in a tie for eighth place at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, Fla., posting a 9-under-par 279 score. Kyle Scott, who lives in Decatur, Ga., tied for ninth place with a 5-under-par total of 283 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Paul Haley and Seth Reeves failed to advance from that site.
Three other Tech alumni – Shun Yat Hak at Hombre Golf Club in Panama City, Fla., John-Tyler Griffin at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., and James White at Plantation Reserve Golf Club in Plantation, Fla. – are attempting to advance this week (Nov. 18-21).
The finals are being held Dec. 11-16 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
