Vestavia Hills, Ala. – Ollie Schniederjans fired his third round under 70 for the tournament Tuesday and tied for second place individually, but Georgia Tech tumbled back to a sixth-place finish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Tech, ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest golf coaches’ poll, was 2-under-par at the turn Tuesday and within striking distance of first-place Alabama. But the Yellow Jackets played the back nine of the Old Overton Golf Club (7,209 yards, par 70) in 13-over-par and finished with a round of 293.
Tech’s 54-hole total of 856 (+16) was 26 shots back of the Crimson Tide (930, -10), which won its home event for the third straight year. Florida State finished second at 843 (+3), while UNLV was third at 849 (+9), both team playing the final round at level par. UAB (952, +12) was fourth, followed by Arkansas (853, +13).
Schniederjans began the round tied for the individual lead with Florida State’s Hank Lebioda and Mississippi State’s Ben Wood. But the Bulldog junior, who had shot 63 in the afternoon round Monday, continued his torrid pace by making birdie on five straight holes during his opening nine on the way to a 64. He finished with a tournament total of 198 (-12) and grabbed a four-stroke win.
