ATLANTA – Defending NCAA champion Troy Matteson and two other Georgia Tech golfers shot subpar scores in Sunday’s final round, leading the 16th-ranked Yellow Jackets to a sixth-place finish in the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.
Matteson fired a 4-under-par 68 Sunday and finished in a tie for eighth individually with Georgia’s David Denham, who each posted a 54-hole total of 207, nine shots under par and eight behind medalist Oliver Wilson of Augusta State, who carded an 8-under 64 for a tournament total of 17-under 199. D.J. Trahan of Clemson also shot 64 Sunday and finished second at 15-under 201, followed by James Heath of Augusta State (68-203).
Sophomore Chan Wonglukiet and freshmen Thomas Jordan had strong finishing rounds for Tech Sunday, each carding 2-under-par 70, while sophomore Nicholas Thompson matched par at 72 to give Tech a team round of 280, eight under par.
But the Jackets were could not match the pace of host Augusta State and top-ranked Clemson, who blistered the 6,875-yard, par-72 Champions Course at Forest Hills Golf Club Sunday in a combined 39 strokes under par. The Jaguars shot 267 (21 shots under par), and finished the tournament at 44-under-par 820, two shots ahead of the Tigers, who posted an 18-under round of 270 Sunday and a tournament score of 822, 42 under par.
Oklahoma State and Wake Forest tied for a distant third at 25-under-par 839, followed by Georgia in fifth at 23-under 841 and Tech in sixth at 22-under 842.
Wongluekiet tied for 25th at 4-under-par 212. Thompson tied for 29th at 3-under 213, and Adam Cranford tied for 46th at 1-over 217 (73 Sunday). Jordan tied for 60th at 3-over 219.
