THE FLATS – Ollie Schniederjans and Stewart Cink both put forth strong performances to get 2018 off on the right foot, finishing seventh and 32nd, respectively, at last weekend’s Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
Schniederjans scored in the 60s all four rounds for a 14-under-par total of 266, finishing three shots out of a playoff between Patton Kizzire and James Hahn. It was his best finish so far in the 2017-18 season and jumped him from 64th to 40th in FedEx Cup points. Cink, meanwhile, posted a second-round 64 and finished at 9-under-par 271, moving up to 67th in FedEx Cup points. Cameron Tringale and Richy Werenski missed the cut.
The PGA Tour begins its West Coast swing this weekend with the Career Builder Challenge in LaQuinta, Calif. Cink, Tringale and Werenski are in the field while Chesson Hadley, 11th in FedEx Cup points with three top-10 finishes in the fall portion of the schedule, resumes his 2017-18 season. Schniederjans takes the week off.
Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar begins his 2018 calendar year in the United Arab Emirates at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Abu Dhabi Country Club. He is one of five Americans (Bryson Dechambeau, Daniel Im, Dustin Johnson and David Lipsky are the others) competing in this European Tour event, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
In other PGA Tour news this week, Cink, Hadley, Kuchar and Tringale have all been named to the Tour’s 16-member Player Advisory Council for 2018. The PAC advises and consults with the PGA TOUR Policy Board (Board of Directors) and Commissioner Jay Monahan on issues affecting the TOUR.
Following his second-round 65 at the 2018 Sony Open in Hawaii, Ollie Schniederjans talks about his round, goals for the year and his unique style.
In the third round of the 2018 Sony Open in Hawaii, Ollie Schniederjans shot a three-under-par 67, highlighted by his five birdies and an eagle.
