Georgia Tech #ProJackets Golf Report

March 7, 2018

THE FLATS – The PGA Tour’s Florida schedule resumes this week after a week off for the World Golf Championships event in Mexico, and one of Georgia Tech’s current players joins a full contingent of Tech alumni are in the field for the Valspar Championship … Four former Yellow Jackets on the Web.com Tour are back in action this week following a month-long tour hiatus … this and more in this week’s #ProJackets Golf Report.

Yellow Jacket sophomore Tyler Strafaci (Davie, Fla.) will not be with his teammates in Myrtle Beach this weekend, instead joining five Tech alumni in the field for the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla. Strafaci earned an exemption into the field by winning the Valspar Collegiate Invitational last March, just as former Jacket Ollie Schniederjans had done in 2015. The sophomore has a 71.56 stroke average and a pair of top-10 finishes this year.

Schniederjans missed the cut playing as an amateur (71-75), and missed the cut again last spring as a pro (71-72) on the par-71 Copperhead course at Innisbrook Resort.

Strafaci is paired for the first two rounds with Abraham Ancer of Mexico and Ben Silverman of Canada. Also in the field at the Valspar are Stewart Cink, Chesson Hadley, Richy Werenski and Schniederjans, all of whom had last week off while Matt Kuchar was Tech’s lone representative in the WGC-Mexico Championship. He finished 58th. Kuchar is in a heavyweight threesome for the first two rounds with Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott.

“I’ve told [Strafaci] not to measure yourself against the Tour players – the golf course is set up for them. Whether you make the cut or not doesn’t mean you’re any better or worse than you were before you go down there.” Tech coach Bruce Heppler

Category flow chart a la @chadparker2. Chicken, Ribs, Pork, Brisket all scheduled out to the minute. So far, very little deviation. So far…. pic.twitter.com/aNzppjKMH5

Had a great time, as always, competing @SipandSwineBBQ with my boys @mlipper91 and @chadparker2. We are @queschool strong even though our highest finish was 27th (chicken) out of 59 teams! Here’s our brisket box which was a beauty, but a fraction undercooked for perfection. pic.twitter.com/Zrqv4ez4l6

Web.com Tour: After a month-long break in the schedule, the Web.com Tour resumts this weekend in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico for the El Bosque Mexico Championship, where Anders Albertson, Roberto Castro, Seth Reeves and Nicholas Thompson are all in the field working to get themselves into the top 25 by the end of the season and earn back their PGA Tour cards. Albertson is the highest-ranked of the group in earnings (37th). Thompson has been busy even without competition, working to raise money for the victims of the recent shoot shooting at his alma mater, Stoneman Douglas High School.
