THE FLATS – Only three former Georgia Tech players were in action last weekend on the PGA Tour, but one of them nearly took home a title when Chesson Hadley came up one stroke shy of joining a playoff at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas … J.T. Griffin advances to the final stage of Web.com Tour qualifying, and four other Yellow Jackets attempt to do the same this week … This and more in the Georgia Tech #ProJackets Golf Report.
In his third event since rejoining the PGA Tour full-time, Hadley fired a 65 in the second round, and closed on the weekend with 69-68 and finished at 8-under-par 276. Patrick Cantlay, Alex Cjeka and Whee Kim finished at 9-under-par to force a playoff, which Cantlay won.
Hadley, who won twice last season on the Web.com Tour and finished No. 1 in overall earnings, has finished third, second and tied for fourth in his three PGA Tour events in the fall portion of the season. Over nine rounds he has shot a cumulative 34-under-par and ranks 12th in scoring average. He holds seventh place in the early stages of the race for the FedEx Cup and has exceeded $1.1 million in earnings, a figure which ranked 98th at the end of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season.
He heads down to Playa del Carmen, Mexico this week along with Werenski, Stewart Cink and Ollie Schniederjans for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
In the second round of the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Chesson Hadley takes his 22-foot flop shot sky high on the par-5 15th hole and holes out for eagle.
Web.com Tour: J.T. Griffin, one of five Yellow Jackets attempting to qualify for the Web.com Tour through its qualifying school, became the first to make it to the final stage last week when he tied for 14th place (21 qualified) with a 5-under-par 283 at Highland Oaks Golf Club in Dothan, Ala.
Bo Andrews, Drew Czuchry, Vincent Whaley and James White will attempt to do the same this week. Three more second stage sites are being held Nov. 7-10 in Brooksville, Fla., McKinney, Texas and Plantation, Fla. Whaley and White are entered in the McKinney, Texas qualifier, while Czuchry attempts to qualify in Brooksville, Fla., and Andrews is in Plantation, Fla.
Survivors advance to the final stage Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz., where the top 45 finishers (and ties) earn full status on the Web.com Tour for 2018.
