Tallahassee, Fla. – Bo Andrews played flawlessly over the final 16 holes and shot a 4-under-par 68 Saturday, lifting 7th-ranked Georgia Tech to a 3-under-par final round of 285 and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. The Yellow Jackets have advanced to play in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship beginning May 28.
No. 19 North Florida, which shot 7-under-par 281 Saturday, No. 6 Washington 6-under 282) and No. 14 Florida State (5-under 283) held true to form Saturday with good rounds and finished 1-2-3. The Ospreys finished 54 holes at 34-under 830, to win the regional by three shots over the Huskies (833, -31) and by six over the host Seminoles (836, -28).
Tech, which was 7-under for its round and 19-under for the tournament at one point Saturday, had some hiccups on the final three holes and finished at 15-under 849.
Oklahoma won a playoff over South Florida for the final qualifying spot after the Bulls played the par-5 final hole four shots under par to tie the Sooners. Oregon State, which shot the best round of the day at 10-under 278, finished one shot out of the playoff.
The top five teams from each of the six regional tournaments being held around the country this weekend will make up the 30-team field for the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga.
“We’re thrilled,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “This was a pressure-packed week for us and a pressure-packed round today. Under the circumstances, this might be the best round we’ve ever played. Bo played a stud round today, and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Anders Albertson shot a 71, Ollie Schniederjans a 72 and Shun Yat Hak a 74 Saturday to count for the Yellow Jackets, who advanced through an NCAA regional for the 23rd time in 25 tries and will make their 26th appearance in the NCAA finals. All but one of those have occurred since 1985.
Tech began the day in a fifth place tie with South Florida, with Oklahoma just one stroke back. The Yellow Jackets struggled to make a move until the back nine, where they opened up a six-shot cushion on the Sooners while the Bulls slid backward on the leaderboard. Oregon, in fourth place at the outset, shot 6-over-par and dropped out of contention.
The Jackets made things interesting, however, as Hak triple-bogeyed the last hole, and Schniederjans and Albertson both double-bogeyed the par-4 16th. Just like that, Tech’s cushion was down to two shots, but Andrews, Schniederjans and Albertson each recorded birdies at 18, and the Jackets could breathe again.
Andrews, who won the Gary Koch Invitational in April for his first career victory, bogeyed the second hole, then posted five birdies and 11 pars on the final 16 holes. He tied for 14th place individually at 6-under-par 210 to record his fourth top-20 finish this year. Albertson tied for 10th at 7-under 209, his fifth top-10 finish, while. Schniederjans secured his eighth top-20 finish, tying for 19th place at 4-under 212.
Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan ran away with medalist honors, carding a 5-under 67 Saturday for a 54-hole total of 201 (-15). He was three shots clear of North Florida’s MJ Maguire, the 18- and 36-hole leader, FSU’s Chase Seiffert and Richmond’s Daniel Walker, who each finished at 12-under 204. Walker shot a 4-under 68 Saturday to help him secure low individual honors and advance to the NCAA finals.
