Rocky Face, Ga. – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team was able to weather a blustery day that saw scores soar and held on to win its third-straight title at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Yellow Jackets placed four players in the tourney’s top-20 and recorded the lowest team round on each day of the event. The 54-hole tournament, which featured 10 top-25 teams, was contested at the par-72, 6,906-yar Farm Golf Club.
The Jackets were unable to keep up the scoring pace they set on the first two days and settled for an 8-over-par round of 296, tying for low-round honors with runner-up Tennessee on Sunday. Tech’s final team score of 6-under-par, 280-282-296=858, was the only team score under par for the weekend and gave the Jackets an impressive 10-stroke victory. The Volunteers finished the tournament at 4-over-par, 283-289-296=868, in second place.
Tech’s individuals in the field were led by junior Troy Matteson, who finished the tournament at 3-under-par, 68-69-76=213, and was tied with Ryan Hybl of Georgia for third place. Matteson held the lead in the tournament after two rounds, but finished two shots behind medallist D.J. Trahan of Clemson, who carded an even-par round on the final day to finish at 6-under-par, 69-69-72=210.
Joining Matteson in the top 10 was freshman Chan Wongluekiet, who had the best round of the day by a Tech player as he fired a 2-under-par 70 and was among four players tied for fifth place at 2-under-par 69-75-70-214. Senior Kris Mikkelsen was one of two players tied for 11th place as he finished the tournament at 1-over-par, 72-70-75=217. Fellow senior Matt Weibring followed Mikkelsen in the individual standings as he was part of a four-way tie for 17th place at 4-over-par, 71-74-75=222. Rounding out the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field was rookie Nick Thompson, who tied for 23rd place at 75-69-79=223.
Tech will take next weekend off before returning to action October 15-16, by competing in the Jerry Pate Invitational at the Old Overton Golf Course in Birmingham, Ala.
