Yellow Jacket Golfers Roll to Long Cove Invitational Team Title

Nov. 11, 2001

ATLANTA – Led by the play of junior Troy Matteson and senior Matt Weibring, the Georgia Tech men’s golf team rolled past a strong field to claim its second team title of the season by 16 shots at the Long Cove Invitational. The tournament, which replaced the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational, was contested at the par-71, 7,026-yard Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

The field of the tournament included 10 teams that are currently ranked among the nation’s top-20, but the Yellow Jackets made things look easy over the final two days of play, firing a combined team total of 10-under-par to claim the win over second-place Southern California. Tech carded a team round of 4-under-par 280 on Sunday to finish the event at 3-over-par 297-278-280-855. That total allowed the Jackets to outdistance the Trojans, who finished at 19-over-par 297-289-285-871.Tech was the only team to shoot under par in the tournament, finding red numbers in each of the final two rounds.

Matteson led the Tech individuals in the field as he paced three Yellow Jackets in the top 10 with strong play over the final 36 holes, to finish tied with Clemson’s D.J. Trahan (69-70-72-211) in second place at 2-under-par 76-68-67-211. That total put Matteson five shots off the pace of individual champion David Oh of USC, who won his first collegiate tournament with a solid three-day total of 7-under-par 68-69-69-206.

Weibring joined Matteson in the event’s top five, as he was Tech’s most consistent player in the tourney, carding a final round score of 2-under-par 69 to finish alone in fourth place at 1-under-par 73-70-69-212. The finish was Weibring’s first top-10 placement of the year. The third Yellow Jacket in the top 10 was senior Kris Mikkelsen, who like Matteson found his scoring groove over the final 36 holes and finished the event with a 1-under-par round of 70 to end up among four players tied for ninth place at 1-over-par 76-68-70-214. Yellow Jacket freshman Chan Wongluekiet recorded the second top-20 finish of his young career as he finish in a tie for 16th place at 5-over-par 72-72-74-218. The final member of the Tech contingent in the field was freshman Nick Thompson, who was one of eight players tied for 26th place at 76-72-74-222.

The tournament wrapped up the Yellow Jackets fall schedule and Tech will now be off until February, when it will travel to Waikoloa, Hawaii to compete in the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. Full results of the Long Cove Invitational are available at www.golfweek.com.
