Yellow Jacket Golfers Drop to Sixth After 36 Holes at U.S. Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Georgia Tech golf team struggled along with the rest of the field in blustery conditions, falling to sixth place after two rounds of play at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Winds gusted to as much as 35 mph at the par-72, 7,094-yard Tucson National Golf Club, limiting the field to only six sub-par rounds on the day.

The Yellow Jackets finished the second round of competition with a 12-over-par score of 300 to stand at 6-over-par, 282-300=582 after 36 holes of play. The team score of 300 matched the highest score for Tech this year, dating back to the season-opening Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, on September 30. The Jackets trail team leader Texas (278-290=568) by 14 shots entering the final round of play.

Senior Matt Weibring had the best day for Tech on Saturday as he is the lone Yellow Jacket in the Top 10 after a second-round score of 73. Weibring is one of two players tied for seventh place at 2-under-par, 69-73=142. Weibring is seven shots off the pace of individual leader Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, who is at 9-under-par, 62-73=135 after 36 holes.

Joining Weibring in the event’s Top 20 are senior Kris Mikkelsen and freshman Nick Thompson, who are part of a three-way tie for 16th place at 2-over-par. Mikkelsen finished the day with a 2-over-par score of 74 and is at 72-74=146 after two rounds while Thompson is at 68-78=146. Junior Troy Matteson is one of three players tied for 29th place at 5-over-par, 74-75=149 and freshman Chan Wongluekiet is the final member of the Tech contingent, standing in a tie for 36th place at 7-over-par, 73-78=151.

Junior Adam Cranford is competing as an individual in the event and is one of eight players tied for 40th place at 8-over-par, 74-78=152.

The final round of play in the U.S. Collegiate Championships will begin at 9:00 a.m. eastern time on Sunday morning.
