Complete Tuesday qualifying results
Alpharetta, Ga. – Georgia Tech graduates Drew Czuchry, John-Tyler Griffin and James White all earned spots in sectional qualifying by finishing among the top seven finishers in U.S. Open local qualifying Tuesday at the Golf Club of Georgia.
White, a 2012 graduate from Acworth, Ga.,and an All-American in 2011 and 2012, was one of the first players to finish Tuesday, firing a 6-under-par 66 which held up for medalist honors. His score was one shot better than Reid Edstrom of Auburn, Ala., and Jason Perry of Myrtle Beach, S.C., who each shot 5-under-par 67 and moved on to the sectional stage.
Griffin, a 2011 graduate who earned All-America recognition three times and now lives in St. Simons Island, Ga., tied for fourth with Czuchry, an Auburn, Ga., native who graduated from Tech this month, and Michael Parrott of Woodstock, Ga. They shot 4-under-par 68 to also advance.
The Yellow Jacket trio were among eight former and future Tech players competing in the 132-player field Tuesday, and joined Anders Albertson, a current Tech senior from Woodstock, Ga., who earned one of seven available spots Monday to advance to a sectional out of a 132-player field at the Legends at Chateau Elan.
The seventh and final qualifying spot went to Franco Castro of Alpharetta, Ga., who tied Jarrod Barsamian with a 3-under-par 69 but advanced after a playoff. Castro is the younger brother of Tech All-American and current PGA Tour pro Roberto Castro.
The other Tech-connected players competing Tuesday included rising junior Michael Hines, rising sophomore Michael Pisciotta, incoming freshmen Tyler Joiner and Tye Waller, and 2014 graduate Bo Andrews. Waller was the highest finisher among those who did not advance, tying for 28th place with a 1-over-par 73.
Players advancing out of the local qualifiers will compete in sectional qualifying, consisting of 36 holes of stroke play, conducted at two international sites on May 25 (Japan and England) and 12 United States sites on June 8, including Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga. Qualifiers from the two local site in Georgia may, but will not necessarily be, at that sectional qualifier. Another Georgia Tech senior, Ollie Schniederjans, is exempt into the U.S. Open field as the winner of the 2014 Mark McCormack Medal, given to the nation’s top amateur player.
Tuesday’s event was the second of two 18-hole qualifiers for the 2015 U.S. Open Championship will be conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association and one of 111 local qualifiers taking place nationwide between May 4-21.
The 115th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., June 15-21. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
