March 8, 2003

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sophomore Nicholas Thompson fired a second-round 67 to lead the Georgia Tech golf team on the second day of competition at the Toyota Men’s Collegiate Championship. The Yellow Jackets are in ninth place after 36 holes over the par-72, 7,440-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.

Thompson was stellar on the second day of play, as he recorded four birdies on the back nine to finish with the 5-under-par 67. His two-day total of 4-under-par 73-67-140 places him among five players tied for seventh place. That total is just four shots off the pace of individual leader Jason Moon of NC State, who is at 8-under-par 66-70-136 after 36 holes of competition.

In the team standings, the Jackets improved their first round score by one on day two with an even-par round of 288. That puts Tech at 1-over-par, 289-288-577 after two rounds of play. That total has the Yellow Jackets 12 shots behind Texas, which is at 11-under-par 281-284-565.

Senior Adam Cranford continued his best outing of the year as he is among three players tied for 16th place at 2-under-par after a second-round 73. Cranford’s two-day total is 69-73-142. Fellow senior Troy Matteson is the next Tech individual in the field, as he is part of a six-way tie for 25th place at 2-over-par, 71-73-144. Freshman Thomas Jordan and sophomore Chan Wongluekiet round out the Jacket contingent in the field, as they are both tied for 63rd place with matching scores of 76-75-151.
