Aug. 19, 2004

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Nicholas Thompson advanced to the third round of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship Thursday morning by defeating Bronson LaCassie of Australia, 3 and 2.

The senior from Coral Springs, Fla., is in the round of 16, where he will face Jeff Overton of Evansville, Ind., at 1:35 p.m. today. The winner of that match advances to a quarterfinal round match at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The championship is being played at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. Second and third-round matches are being played today, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday and semifinals Saturday. The 36-hole championship match will be played Sunday. Television coverage all four days is on ESPN2 (1-3 p.m. Thursday).

Thompson’s morning match was an up-and-down affair as the competitors halved only three holes out of 16 played. Thompson led 1-up at the turn, then lost the next two holes to trail by one. But the Tech senior won each of the next four holes, carding birdies at Nos. 13 and 15, to close out the match.

Overton dominated his match with John Keller of Bayside, N.Y., going 4-up through eight holes. After dropping the ninth hole, Overton won the 10th, halved the next three holes, then birdied the 14th to clinch the victory.
