Tech Tied for 5th in NCAA Tallahassee Regional

May 17, 2013

Tallahassee, Fla. – Four Georgia Tech players broke par in Friday’s second round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional golf tournament, but the 7th-ranked Yellow Jackets lost some ground on the leaders and stand in a tie for fifth place with South Florida heading into Saturday’s final round.

Tech, seeded second in this regional, shot a 4-under-par 284 Friday, getting identical scores of 71 (-1) from Anders Albertson, Bo Andrews, Seth Reeves and Ollie Schniederjans. But the top three teams after 18 holes – 19th-ranked North Florida, No. 6 Washington and No. 14 Florida State – separated themselves from the rest of the field with stellar rounds.

The Yellow Jackets are bracing for a four-team fight Saturday to secure one of the final two qualifying spots from this regional and advance to compete the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, which begins May 28 at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga. Tech is the host institution.

“You’ve got two teams, North Florida and Florida State, who are in their element here, and Washington is an outstanding team,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “This is a very tough field and it’s a battle. We started out slowly today, but we fought back, played well in the middle of the round and stayed in it. We’ve got to make some putts tomorrow and get a couple of low scores.”

The Ospreys (277, -11 for Friday’s round), Huskies (275, -13) and Seminoles (276, -12) made hay on the back nine of the 6,965-yard, par 72 Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club and are firmly entrenched in the top three positions after 36 holes. North Florida (549, -27) has a two-shot lead on Washington (551, -25), with Florida State (553, -23) another two shots back.

UNF recorded 13 birdies and three bogeys among its counting players on the back nine Friday, while the Huskies posted 13 birdies, two eagles and one bogey, and the FSU had 11 birdies and one bogey. By comparison, Tech posted 10 birdies, but had three bogeys and a double bogey.

Oregon (562, -14), Tech (564, -12), South Florida (564, -12) and Oklahoma (565, -11) occupy the next four positions headed into the final round and are separated by just three strokes. The Ducks shot 6-under 282 Friday, while the Bulls matched Tech’s 284, and the Sooners posted a 7-under 281. If two or more teams remained tied for fifth place after Saturday’s round, they will play off for the final spot.

North Florida’s M.J. Maguire held onto his lead in the medalist race, carding a 4-under-par 68 for a 36-hole total of 133 (-11), one shot ahead of Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan and Florida State’s Chase Sieffert (-10). Albertson dropped into a tie for 10th place at 7-under-par 137, just four shots back.
