Tech Takes Lead in Hilo Intercollegiate Golf

Feb. 8, 2006

ATLANTA – Cameron Tringale fired a six-under-par 65 Wednesday to pace Georgia Tech, while Kevin Larsen added a four-under-par 67 as the third-ranked Yellow Jackets’ golf team took a four-shot lead after the first round of the UH Hilo Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii.

The Yellow Jackets turned in a 16-under-par 268 Wednesday over the 6,777-yard, par-71 Waikoloa Village Golf Course, also getting a pair of 68’s from All-American Roberto Castro and senior Mike Barbosa.

Tech is four shots up on No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State (12-under-par 272). The Cowboys’ Pablo Martin fired a seven-under-par 64 and holds a one-shot edge over Tringale and Hawaii’s Jarett Hamamoto.

Southern California is in third place at 10-under-par 274, with the Rainbows another shot back at 9-under 275, and Pepperdine in fifth at seven-under 277.

The 65 by Tringale, a freshman from Laguna Niguel, Calif., lowered his best career score by two strokes, while Larsen, a junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., carded his eighth subpar round in 13 this year and is in a four-way tie for seventh place. Barbosa’s 68 matched his best of the fall season, and he and Castro are in a large group tied for 11th place.

Tech did not count a 69 from freshman Taylor Hall, but the freshman from LaGrange, Ga., is tied for 21st place individually.

The 21 teams will tee off at 12 noon Eastern time again Thursday in a shotgun start, and the final round is set to begin at the same time Friday.
