New London, N.C. – Anders Albertson, Ollie Schniederjans and Shun Yat Hak each shot 5-under-par 67 Saturday as defending champion Georgia Tech shot a 16-under-par 272, cut eight strokes off its deficit and stands in third place after 36 holes of the 60th Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship.
Albertson, the Tech sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., who had just one bogey and six birdies on his card Saturday, took a two-shot lead in the individual race with a 36-hole total of 133 (-11). Tech’s 272 was its third-lowest score ever on the 7,102-yard, par 72 Old North State Club and its lowest 18-hole score this year.
“We got the momentum early and carried it throughout the round, which was good to see and very important to repeat tomorrow if we hope to win,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “Anders shot 31 on the front, and Ollie posted a 30 on the back, which was terrific playing on their parts. We look forward to the challenge tomorrow.”
No. 14 Florida State, who began the day with an 11-shot lead on the field, shot an 8-under-par round of 280, but watched 9th-ranked Duke get within four strokes after a 15-under-par 273 and the 7th-ranked Yellow Jackets get within five. The Seminoles have a 36-hole total of 551 (-25), while the Blue Devils stand at 555 (-21) and Tech at 556 (-20). Virginia Tech, which shot a 12-under-par 276 Saturday, dropped to fourth place but are only seven shots off the pace at 558 (-18).
Eight of the 11 teams broke par Saturday on the 7,102-yard, par 72 Old North State Club, which gave up 16 rounds in the 60s and 32 subpar rounds from the 55 competitors. The individual competition is just as tight at the team race with 25 of the 55 players sitting under par for 36 holes and within 10 shots of the lead.
Florida State’s Chase Seiffert, with the day’s best round of 66, is in second place at 135 (-9), two shots behind Albertson, while Schniederjans and Virginia Tech’s Mikey Moyers (68 Saturday) are tied for third place at 136 (-8). First-round leader Daniel Berger of FSU (72) and Duke’s Julian Suri (66) are tied for fifth at 137 (-7).
Hak, a freshman from Lake Mary, Fla., moved into the top 20 after his no-bogey round Saturday, tied for 19th place at 143 (-1). Bo Andrews, who supplied a 1-inder 71 Saturday for Tech, is tied for 26th place at level-par 144.
Final-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and Tech will be in the final groups with FSU and Duke beginning at 11:10 a.m. The forecast for Sunday is for rain and chillier temperatures.
