Waikoloa, Hawai’i – Bo Andrews fired a 3-under-par 69 and two other Georgia Tech players broke par Wednesday as the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets shot a 5-under-par 283 and stand in fifth place after the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational.
Andrews, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., birdied five holes and bogeyed two and is tied for 10th individually. Richard Werenski and freshman Michael Hines each shot 1-under 71 in a day when scoring conditions were excellent on the Kings’ Course at the Waikoloa Resort. Anders Albertson provided the fourth counting score for Tech with an even-par 72.
Tech’s 5-under-par total is six strokes behind fourth-ranked UCLA and TCU, who posted 11-under-par team totals of 277. No. 2 Texas is in third place at 9-under 279, followed by No. 7 Washington (-8) and No. 25 Auburn (-7). Nine of the nation’s top 30 teams are in the 20-team field.
“Conditions were great for scoring today,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “We left some out there throughout the day, but did some good things for the first round of the spring. I was pleased with their attitude the entire day and we’re looking forward to the next two days.”
TCU has the top two players on the individual leaderboard, with Daniel Jennevret coming in at 5-under 67 for a one shot lead over teammate Eli Cole (68). The Bruins have three players – Pedro Figueiredo, Manav Shah and Pontus Widegren – in a group of seven other players tied with Cole for second place.
Andrews and three others are tied for 10th. Ollie Schniederjans shot 75 Wednesday and failed to count, while freshman Shun Yat Hak carded a 71 competing as an individual and is in a group of 16 players, including Werenski and Hines, tied for 23rd place.
The second round begins at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday in a shotgun start.
