ATLANTA – Nicholas Thompson fired an 8-under-par 64 Wednesday, leading fifth-ranked Georgia Tech to a 10-shot lead after the first round of the Taylor Made-Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
Tech posted a 16-under-par team score of 272 over the 7,074-yard, par 72 King’s Course, 10 strokes better than UCLA at 282. Arizona State and Washington were tied for third place at 5-under 283, Stanford and UC-Davis were tied for fifth at 284, TCU was seventh at 285 and Southern California was eighth at 286.
The 64 by Thompson, a junior from Coral Springs, Fla., led the individual standings and also was his best round of the year by three shots.
Junior Chan Wongluekiet and sophomore Mike Barbosa each carded a 3-under-par 69, season-low rounds for both, and were tied for fourth place. Freshman Kevin Larsen came in at 2-under-par 70 and stood in 11th place. Freshman Roberto Castro shot a 74 for the Yellow Jackets.
