Tech Golfers in 14th After Two Rounds at Morris Williams Intercollegiate

March 17, 2003

AUSTIN, Texas – The Georgia Tech golf team struggled on the first day and is in 14th place after 36 holes of play at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. While the Yellow Jackets had finished two rounds, the second round of play was suspended due to darkness and will be completed on Tuesday. The two-day 54-hole tournament is being contested at the par-72, 6,906-yard Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.

Tech finished the first day of play with a team score of 11-over-par, 297-290-587. That score puts the Jackets well off the pace of team leader and host Texas, which blitzed the field with a 36-hole score of 20-under-par, 277-279-556 on the first day of competition.

Senior Adam Cranford was Georgia Tech’s top individual performer on the first day, as he is tied for 35th place at 2-over-par, 75-71-146 following the first two rounds. That score is 12 shots off the impressive score of individual leader J.J. Wall of Texas, who fired a 10-under-par 65-69-134 on the opening day.

Following Cranford in the individual standings is fellow senior Troy Matteson, who is tied for 46th place, just one shot back at 3-over-par, 73-74-147. Sophomores Nicholas Thompson and Chan Wongluekiet are both tied for 58th place at 36 holes with their scores of 5-over-par, 74-75-149 and 79-70-149 respectively. The final member of the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field is freshman Thomas Jordan, who is in 87th place after a first-day score of 75-82-157.

The Morris Williams Intercollegiate will conclude on Tuesday with the completion of the second round and the third round of play at the Austin Country Club. Full tournament results are available at www.texassports.com
