STANFORD, Calif. — Led by a 5-under-par score of 66 by sophomore Nicholas Thompson, the Georgia Tech golf team is in fourth place after 18 holes of play at the Nelson Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The 54-hole tournament is being contested at the 6,786-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Club in Stanford, Calif.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets carded an opening-round score of 1-under-par, 283. Tech trails team leader Washington by nine shots entering the second round of play. The Huskies finished the round at 10-under-par, 274.
Thompson was the top Tech finisher of the day, standing alone in third place at 5-under-par 31-35=66. That total was just two shots off the pace of Washington’s Dan Potter, who is the individual leader after finishing the day at 7-under-par, 34-30=64.
The next Tech individual in the field is senior Troy Matteson, who is tied for 20th place at even par, 35-36=71. He is followed by freshman Thomas Jordan who carded a 1-over-par round of 36-36=72 on Friday to stand among seven players tied for 27th place. The next Tech individual in the field is Chan Wongluekiet, who is tied for 44th place at 3-over-par, 38-36=74. Rounding out the Tech contingent in the field is freshman Michael Barbosa, who is tied for 65th place after an opening round of 39-37=76.
