Tech Golfers Finish Eighth at Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

Oct. 14, 2003

Birmingham, Ala. – Led by a season-best round of 4-under-par, 67 by freshman Kevin Larsen, the Georgia Tech golf team was one of only five teams under par on the final day and finished eighth at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. The 54-hole tournament was contested at the par-71, 6,958-yard Old Overton Golf Club.

The Yellow Jackets finished the final round with a team score of 4-under-par, 280 and finished play in the tournament at 6-under-par, 284-282-280-846. That total was still 28 shots off the blistering pace of team champion Oklahoma State, which finished the tournament with a score of 34-under-par, 277-268-273-818.

Larsen was solid throughout the week, as he carded a pair of rounds in the 60s, including his final-round 67. His final score of 5-under-par, 68-73-67-208 placed him in a tie for 17th place. Larsen’s score was 13 shots behind individual medalist Bill Haas of Wake Forest, who was stellar on the week, finishing with three rounds in the 60s to complete play at 18-under-par, 63-66-66-195.

The next Tech individual in the field was freshman Roberto Castro, who finished with a closing-round score of even-par, 70 to tie for 25th place at 1-under-par, 72-69-71-212. He was followed by junior Chan Wongluekiet, who finished alone in 36th place with a 54-hole score of 71-73-72-216, and sophomore Mike Barbosa, who carded a 1-under-par, 70 on Tuesday to finish in 37th place at 73-74-70-217. Thomas Jordan was the final member of the Yellow Jacket contingent, as he finished tied for 46th at 78-67-76-221.
