Tech Golfers Fifth at ACC Championship

ATLANTA – Senior Troy Matteson led Georgia Tech with a 2-over-par 74 and stands in a tie for ninth, and freshman Thomas Jordan is tied for 16th after a 76 Friday, and the Yellow Jackets are in fifth place after the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

The tournament is being contested on the 7,102-yard, par 72 Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C. The second round is set for Saturday and the final 18 holes Sunday. Tech has won three of the last four ACC Championships, including the 2002 event at the Old North State Club.

None of the nine ACC teams broke par Friday, with North Carolina leading the way at 2-over-par 290, followed by Wake Forest at 293, Clemson at 294, Duke at 303 and Tech at 305 (17 shots over par). Virginia, Florida State, Maryland and NC State hold the bottom four positions.

Bill Haas of Wake Forest leads the medal race with a 3-under-par 69, followed by Dustin Bray of North Carolina at 1-under 71. Another shot back at 72 is a group of five golfers, including Ramon Bescansa and Richard Treis of the first-place Tar Heels.

Other Tech scores after 18 holes include sophomore Nicholas Thompson, tied for 22nd with a 77, senior Adam Cranford, tied for 30th with a 78, and sophomore Chan Wongluekiet, tied for 34th with a 79.
