Tech Golfers Continue to Lead at ACC Championships

April 20, 2002

UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. – The Georgia Tech golf team cooled off from its torrid opening-round pace, but still posted a 4-under-par score on the second day of play, led by the performance of rookie Nick Thompson, the Yellow Jackets continue to lead the ACC Championships after 36 holes of competition. The 54-hole tournament is being contested at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.

After posting a season-best 17-under-par round of 271 on the opening day of play, the Jackets found red-figures once again on day two with a score of 4-under-par 284, to stand at 21-under-par, 271-284-555 after 36 holes of play. That total puts Tech five strokes ahead of second-place and second-ranked Clemson (280-280-560) entering the final round of play on Sunday. It will be a two-team race for the title, as NC State is 12 shots behind Tech at 9-under-par, 288-279-567.

Thompson continues to lead the Tech individuals in the field, as he is alone in second place after carding a second-round score of 3-under-par 69, to stand at 8-under-par, 67-69-136 after two rounds. That total puts him three shots off the pace of individual leader Dustin Bray of North Carolina, who has been steady for 36 holes and stands at 11-under-par, 66-67-133.

Senior Matt Weibring turned in his second-straight solid round of the tournament, a 2-under-par 70 and he is alone in third place behind Thompson at 6-under-par, 68-70-138. The third Yellow Jacket in the top 10 is senior Kris Mikkelsen, who is one of three players tied for ninth place at 3-under-par, after finishing the second round with a 2-over-par score of 74 to stand at 67-74-141 after two rounds. Freshman Chan Wongluekiet was steady once again on Saturday, carding his second-straight round of 71 and is part of a five-way tie for 12th place at 2-under-par, 71-71-142. The final member of the Tech contingent in the field is junior Troy Matteson, who struggled over the second 18 holes of play and is tied with two other players for 27th place at 2-over-par, 69-77-146.

The ACC Championships will conclude on Sunday with the final round of play at the Old North State Club. The Yellow Jackets will be grouped in threesomes with Clemson and NC State for the final round and will tee off beginning at 10:30 a.m. Full tournament results are available at www.theacc.com.
