ATLANTA (May 20) – Georgia Tech’s golf team closed out the NCAA East Regional with a final round score of 291, its best of the tournament and finished third in the event. The top-ranked Yellow Jackets advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, May 31-June 3, at Grand National Golf Club in Opelika, Ala.
No. 2-ranked Clemson, with a score of 871, won the regional by 12 shots over North Florida, which posted a score of 883. Tech was another shot back at 884, followed by East Tennessee State (888). Georgia and Georgia State tied for fifth at 889, followed by Mississippi State at 891 and Auburn at 894. North Carolina and Virginia were tied for ninth at 895, with Wake Forest hanging onto 11th place at 896 with six teams still to complete play.
The top 11 finishers advance to the NCAA Championship. One ACC team, N.C. State, was a lock to qualify until one of its players signed an incorrect scorecard. Carl Patterson, the second-round leader after a pair of 69s, was disqualified for the mistake and forced the Wolfpack to count a score 10 shots higher.
Tech was carried Saturday by its No. 3-4-5 players, paced by freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas), who shot a 72. Seniors Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.), and sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) each carded a 73. ACC Player of the Year Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) shot 76 and did not count for the Jackets Saturday.
For the tournament, Kuchar and Forrester led Tech with three-round totals of 220, followed by Molder at 222 and Matteson and Weibring at 228.
