Under optimum scoring conditions Saturday, the host Bears blistered the 7,175-yard, par 72 Brickyard at Riverside Course to the tune of 16-under-par 272, moving to 20-under 556 for the tournament and a one-stroke lead over the 2nd-ranked Yellow Jackets. Hans Reimers shot 65 to pace Mercer, which placed four players under par for the day and played the back nine in 13-under-par. Mercer is in position to win its tournament for the first time in the event’s seven-year history.

Tech’s 13-under score also included a 69 from Ollie Schniederjans, who took over the individual lead by one stroke, and a 70 from Bo Andrews. The Jackets, with a 19-under-par 557 for 36 holes, led by as many as seven shots in the middle of Saturday’s round before Mercer rallied, and trail in a tournament for the first time all fall.

“We played very solid for the most part today,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “Bo and Anders gave us under-par rounds today, which was good to see. We’re in the final groups for the third time this year, so we look forward to tomorrow.”

Virginia Tech (565, -11) is in third place, followed by South Florida (567, -9) and 8th-ranked Georgia (572, -4). The Hokies shot 6-under-par Saturday, while the USF and the Bulldogs each went 7-under for the round. Georgia State shot 5-under and moved into sixth place in the 14-team field.

Schniederjans (136, -8), bidding to win his second tournament of the fall, has a one-shot lead over Mercer’s Emmanuel Kountakis (-7), who also shot 69 Saturday, and Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent (-7), who fired a 67. Seth Reeves (138, -6) is tied for fourth with Reimers, and Albertson is tied for 13th at 2-under 142.
