Song Ties for Third, but Tech Falls to Sixth at Bulls Bay Golf

March 29, 2005

ATLANTA – Chan Song completed his second round in 73 strokes and matched that score for this third round Tuesday, finishing in a tie for third place in the medal race of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Golf Tournament at Awendaw, S.C. But the rest of the Yellow Jackets were unable to keep pace with first-day leader Augusta State and Kentucky and finished sixth in the team race.

The Jaguars rallied with a final round 286 (two under par) after a second-round 304, and Kentucky posted rounds of 287 and 289 as the two teams finished in a tie at 866. Kentucky won the team title in a one-hole playoff. Tech remained 14 shots off the pace (880) at the finish, but rounds of 297 and 293 allowed Auburn (284 – 870), Georgia (283 – 873) and LSU (290 – 876) to pass the Yellow Jackets.

First-round leader Scott Jamieson of Augusta State closed with rounds of 71 and 68 for a total of 11-under-par 205 and won medalist honors by five shots over Webb Simpson of Wake Forest (210).

The tie for third was the best-ever finish for Song, who tied with John Holmes of Kentucky at four-under 212, followed by Matt Kohn of Kentucky at 215 and a group of three players at even-par 216.

Mike Barbosa tied for 15th individually at three-over 219 after posting rounds of 73 and 75 Tuesday. Roberto Castro shot 74-72 Monday and tied for 32nd place at 223, while Nicholas Thompson (75-75) tied for 45th place at 226, and Kevin Larsen (81-76) tied for 71st at 239.

Tech is off until Apr. 15-17, when the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship takes place in New London, N.C.
