THE FLATS – Georgia Tech head golf coach Bruce Heppler enjoyed a record turnout Monday for the Ramblin’ Wreck Cup, Georgia Tech’s annual fund-raising event for the Yellow Jackets’ golf program at the Golf Club of Georgia.
The annual event typically attracts several former Tech greats and some current PGA Tour players, as well as all the current members of the Yellow Jackets’ nationally-ranked team. Every group has one tour pro or a current or former Tech player. Dinner and a raffle for prizes follows the golf competition. Heppler noted Monday the event attracted a record turnout and a record level of donations.
“It’s always a good day when the past meets the present,” said Heppler. “This event has been the foundation of our program since it began. It’s great for our donors to meet and spend the day with current and former players. It provides them with the special opportunity to see what their investment in people has produced through the years. I sincerely appreciate the donors and alums for making this day a priority on their schedules.”
Monday’s event was attended by PGA Tour pros Roberto Castro and Nicholas Thompson, who had completed the 72-hole Web.com Tour Championship the night before, and 2015 graduate Ollie Schniederjans, who had returned from the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland the night before. Larry Mize, the 1987 Masters Champion, also attended along with Tour pros Cameron Tringale, Troy Matteson, Matt Weibring, Richard Werenski, Paul Haley, Seth Reeves and John-Tyler Griffin.
Top honors in the net score race went to Gene Brooks, Gene Brooks III, Toby Latimer and Wes Latimer with a 55. The group of Ben Collier, Terry Fox, Kevin Parker and Vincent Whaley took gross score honors with a 57.
