THE FLATS – Despite a strong charge through the second and third week of the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGATour, only Matt Kuchar will represent Georgia Tech alumni in the week’s Tour Championship by Coca-Cola at East Lake Golf Club.
Kuchar, a 2000 Tech graduate with seven PGA Tour victories, has made the top 30 season-ending event for the sixth consecutive year, a status which brings with it invitations to all four major championships in 2016. The Sea Island, Ga., resident is No. 21 in FedEx Cup points after tying for 41st at last week’s BMW Championship, where he started strong (67-67) but faded on the weekend.
Cameron Tringale made a furious charge on Sunday at the BMW in an effort to make the Tour Championship for the second straight year, but his closing 66 lifted him only into a tie for seventh place and to No. 36 in the points standings. After an opening 72 at Conway Farms, Tringale closed 64-69-66 to finish at 13-under-par 271.
Bryce Molder was unable to make a move of any sort at the BMW, starting at No. 69 and finishing at No. 70 after a tie for 68th finish at the BMW.
Charlie Rymer, Georgia Tech All-American in the late 1980s and now a co-host of the Morning Drive program on Golf Channel, will be on the Tech campus taping segments for his program that will air on Morning Drive throughout the weekend while the Tour Championship is being contested at East Lake.
Web.com Tour – In the second of four Web.com Finals events last weekend, Roberto Castro had a strong weekend at the Small Business Connection Championship, finishing with a 66 to tie for ninth place (10-under 278) and move up to 11th place in Web.com Finals earnings. Two events remain, including this weekend’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio on a course Castro has played a few times before, the Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
Nicholas Thompson, who finished the PGA Tour season outside the top 125, missed the cut for the second straight week last weekend. The top 75 money earners from this year’s Web.com Tour join with the No. 126-200 earners from the PGA Tour for four events, after which the top 50 in earnings from the four events will gain PGA Tour status. The top 25 in regular-season earnings have already qualified for their 2015-16 cards.
Meanwhile, another group of Yellow Jackets are preparing for the first stage of the Web.com Tour Q-School October 6-9 at four different sites. Anders Albertson, Bo Andrews and Drew Czuchry advanced out of pre-qualifying events two weeks ago. John-Tyler Griffin, Seth Reeves, Kyle Scott and James White, who have played this summer mostly in eGolf and SwingThought.com events, also are in the first stage. Troy Matteson, Matt Weibring and Richard Werenski, who had full Web.com Tour status this year but did not qualify for the finals, will begin Q-School either in the first or second stage.
SwingThought.com Tour – Kyle Scott and Drew Czuchry earned top-5 finishes at last weekend’s Callaway Gardens-Mountain View Pro Series event. Scott shot 13-under-par 203 to finish third, one shot out of a two-way tie for first, which was worth $1,800. Czuchry tied for fourth at 12-under 204 for $1,300.
European Tour – Stewart Cink, whose PGA Tour season came to an end with The Barclays, played last weekend’s 72° Open D’Italia on the European Tour on an invitation and tied for 41st place (11-under 277), winning €9,450.
