#CARDIACJACKETS STRIKE AGAIN
• During the 2015 season, the Yellow Jackets had a knack for late-game heroics, claiming four walk-off wins and a 9-3 record in games decided by one run.
• The #CardiacJackets made a triumphant return Wednesday night in Statesboro as Georgia Tech took home a 6-5 win in 16 innings. Junior Brandon Gold’s 3-run home run to dead center in the 16th put the Jackets up 6-3. Georgia Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the 16th for the decisive 6-5 margin.
• Wednesday marked the first time the Jackets had trailed after the sixth, seventh or eighth inning in 2016.
• Wednesday’s game is the longest in Georgia Tech program history (by innings), surpassing the previous mark of 15 innings set in 1933 vs. Oglethorpe and tied in 2011 vs. NC State.
WHAT’S GOOD IS GOLD…AGAIN
• Junior Brandon Gold picked the most opportune time to hit his second career home run. With two runners aboard and two out Wednesday night in the top of the 16th inning, Gold turned on the first pitch he saw and delivered a 3-run home run 395 feet to straightaway center field at Georgia Southern’s J.I. Clements Stadium.
• It was Gold’s first appearance in Tech’s batting lineup in 2016. Gold was the Jackets’ starting pitcher in last weekend’s season-opening 5-2 win over Purdue. In that game, Gold struck out a career-high eight batters in 5.0 innings but earned the no-decision.
THE FRESHMEN 0.75
• Through four games, Georgia Tech’s freshmen pitching staff has accounted for three wins and one save. Seven Tech rookies – Jonathan Hughes (1-0), Keyton Gibson (1-0), Burton Dulaney (1-0), Jake Lee (1 Sv), Micah Carpenter, Bobby Gauvreau and Robert Winborne – have a combined 0.75 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 24.0 innings pitched (2 ER).
GOING, GOING, GON-ZO
• Senior Matt Gonzalez hit his first home run of the season – a solo shot to left field – in the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s marathon 6-5 win at Georgia Southern.
• Gonzalez has now hit 10 career bombs. Georgia Tech is 8-2 when Gonzalez hits a home run and the Yellow Jackets have won six straight when Gonzo has homered.
EARNING THEIR KEEP
• Georgia Tech’s pitching staff continues to keep the opposition off the scoreboard. Yellow Jacket pitchers have allowed just eight runs (four earned) in 43.0 innings this season.
• Tech is one of four teams in Division I with a team ERA below 1.00. Tech’s 0.84 team ERA ranks fourth nationally behind Michigan (0.26), Boston College (0.50) and West Virginia (0.69).
DOUBLE UP
• Through four games, Georgia Tech leads the ACC and ranks eighth nationally with seven double plays turned. Since 2012, the Yellow Jackets have turned 256 double plays – the second-highest total nationally during that span. Only Mississippi State (268) has turned more double plays since 2012.
