Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

Aug. 16, 2016

THE FLATS – Richy Werenski has been flying under the radar on the Web.com Tour since winning the BMW Charity Pro-Am in May, missing six cuts in eight events and earning less than $5,000. No one paid much attention last weekend either.

As the golf world focused on the Olympics last weekend and Georgia Tech fans celebrated Matt Kuchar’s stunning rally on Sunday to win the Bronze medal, Werenski quietly returned to form, firing rounds of 66-66 on the weekend to finish second by one shot at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Mo.

Werenski picked up $72,900 for the runner-up finish, his third of the 2016 season. In doing so, he traded places with Ollie Schniederjans on the Web.com Tour money list, re-claiming the No. 2 spot while Schniederjans fell to third after missing the cut. Anders Albertson tied for 17th place and made a modest gain to 51st on the money list.

It has been a feast-or-famine type of year for Werenski, who has made only eight cuts in 18 events, yet has a win and three seconds, and six total finishes in the top 25. Yet he has guaranteed himself a spot on the PGA Tour for 2016-17.

Werenski is taking this week off (News Sentinel Open in Knoxville, Tenn.) before traveling to Portland for next week’s final regular-season event.

“Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I just have to stick to my game plan and work on improving for when I get to the PGA TOUR next year,” he told PGA Tour.com. “That’s coming up quick, so I’m really focusing on getting better for that.”

PGA Tour: All of Tech’s current PGA Tour pros except Kuchar – Roberto Castro, Stewart Cink, Chesson Hadley, Bryce Molder and Cameron Tringale – are in the field for this week’s Wyndham Classic, the last regular-season event of 2015-16 before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. Castro (56th), Molder (76th) and Tringale (101st) are in good position to play at The Barclays next week. Matt Kuchar, taking this week off after winning the bronze medal at the Olympics, is 16th.

Cink tied for 40th at the John Deere Classic last weekend, the only one of four former Yellow Jackets to make the cut, in his first action since the RBC Canadian Open in mid-July. The 1995 Tech graduate and 2010 Open Champion has played a limited schedule since his wife, Lisa, began undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
