Molder Fires a Course Record 62, as Jackets Claim 36-Hole Lead at Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior golfer Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) continued his outstanding play in the 2000-01 season by firing a second-round score of 62, to set a school and course record and take the individual lead at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event is being contested at the 6,958-yard, par-71 Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.

Led by Molder’s outstanding play, the Yellow Jackets claimed the 36-hole lead in the team standings with a first-day, two-round total of 15-under-par, 282-271=553. The second-round 13-under-par score of 271 was the second-lowest team round in Georgia Tech history. The Jackets lead top-ranked Georgia (277-278=555) by two shots entering the final round.

Molder’s second round 62 broke the previous course record of 64 and the Georgia Tech school record of 63, which was held by Mikko Rantanen at the 1994 NCAA Championships. That score, coupled with a first-round score of 67, has Molder at 13-under-par 67-62=129, and he leads Hunter Mahan (71-63=134) USC by five shots after 36 holes of play.

Molder was followed in the individual standings by sophomore Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas), who also had an outstanding day, and is one of four players tied for 13th place at 2-under-par, 76-64=140. Also in the top 20 for Tech is senior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.) who is tied for 17th place at 1-under-par, 70-71=141.

The next Yellow Jacket individual in the field is junior Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas), who is part of a three-way tie for 36th at 4-over-par, 71-75=146. Rounding out the Tech contingent is junior Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.), who is alone in 40th place at 6-over-par, 74-74=148.

The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes of play.
