FORT MILL, S.C. (May 19) – Georgia Tech’s top-ranked golf team charged into second place after two rounds of the NCAA East Regional golf tournament Friday in Moosic, Pa., with three teams still out on the Glenmaura National Golf Course when the round was called due to darkness.
The second round started late Friday due to bad weather the day before which forced nine teams to complete their rounds in the early morning hours Friday. Among the three teams out on the course when the second round was called was first-round leader East Tennessee State.
Tech shot 296, one stroke better than its first-round score, and its two-round total of 593 is 12 shots behind Clemson. North Carolina and North Florida are tied for third at 594, followed by N.C. State at 595. Georgia, Georgia State and Mississippi State are tied for sixth at 599, while South Carolina is ninth at 601, and Virginia and Wake Forest are tied for 10th at 602.
ACC Player of the Year Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) is in a tie for ninth after his 75 Saturday for a two-round total of 146, eight shots off the pace of N.C. State’s Carl Patterson (69138). Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) carded 73’s and each stand in a tie for 12th at 147. Freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) followed his opening 81 with a 75 and is at 156, and sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) shot 77 for a tournament total of 155.
The three teams still out on the course will complete their second rounds at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. The third and final round will follow. The top 11 finishers after Saturday’s round advance to the NCAA Championship, May 31-June 3 at Opelika, Ala.
