ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team used a consistent team round and is alone in fourth place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The 54-hole event is being contested at the 6,906-yard, par-72 layout of The Farm in Dalton, Ga.
The Yellow Jackets counted three rounds in the low 70s and finished the day with a team score of 2-under-par 286. That total places them eight shots off the pace of first-round leader Georgia, which had a pair of scores in the 60s and finished the day with a team total of 278.
Leading the Tech contingent for the second-straight week is senior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who carded a 2-under-par score of 34-36-70, and is one of six players tied for eighth place. He trails first-round individual leader Nick Cassini of Georgia by five shots, after Cassini fired a 7-under-par 32-33-65 and leads fellow Bulldog Ryan Hybl (34-33-67) by two strokes.
Following Molder in the individual standings is junior Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas), who is one of five players tied for 14th place at 1-under-par 38-33-71. Senior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.) was the third Yellow Jacket at or below par, as he carded an even-par 37-35-72 in the first round of play, and is one of 10 players tied for 19th place in the individual standings.
Rounding out the Georgia Tech contingent in the field is junior Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.), who is one of five players in 29th place after his opening round-score of 1-over-par, 35-38-73. Also in the field is sophomore Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas), who part of a seven-way tie for 59th place after a first-day score of 37-40-77.
