Men's Golf Moves into a Tie for First at Golf World Invitational

ATLANTA (Nov. 6) – Georgia Tech’s golf team fired a blistering 15-under-par 273 as a squad Saturday and moved into a tie atop the leaderboard at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational at the par 72, 6,651-yard Arthur Hills Golf Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The team’s 273 was the second lowest round in school history, only surpassed by last year’s team with a 270 at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate.

The Yellow Jackets had four golfers shoot in the 60s as senior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) led the way with a 67, and both senior Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) each carded 69s. Redshirt-freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) bounced back with a 68 after a 76 Friday to help Tech end in a second day tie with Georgia. The Jackets have a two-day total of 281-273–554, while Georgia has shot a 279-275–554.

Forrester moved into a tie for fifth with a two-day mark of 69-67–136, while Kuchar was tied for 11th at 69-69–138 and Molder was tied for 19th at 70-69–139. Sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) is tied for 37th at 73-70–143 and Matteson is tied for 44th at 76-68–144. Bulldog Erik Compton is the leader after shooting a 66-66–132, while Nick Cassini is tied for fifth after shooting 69-67–136.

Play ends with 18 holes Sunday and is the Jacket’s last competition of the fall. Tech entered the tournament No. 2 in the Golfweek computer ranking and No. 4 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Foundation poll.
