Men's Golf Finishes Fifth in Iron Duke Golf Classic

ATLANTA (Oct. 18) – Georgia Tech’s golf team finished 21-over-par and placed fifth Monday in the Iron Duke Golf Classic at the par 72, 7,045-yard Duke Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) tied for second on the day to lead the Jackets, as he finished at even par with a two-day total of 70-74144.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after rain Sunday stopped play after the first 18 holes and host Duke won the team title after finishing with a 10-over-par 291-295586 score. Wayne Raath of Florida Southern was the only golfer under par, as he finished at 3-under to take medalist honors.

Molder notched his ninth top-2 or better finish and 14th top-5 finish in 29 career tournaments as he tied with Martin Maritz of Tulsa, Michael Hospodar of Old Dominion and Mike Christensen of Duke for second. In eight rounds of play this year, he has played five under par for a 70.50 stroke average. Redshirt-sophomore Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) registered his second top-20 finish in three starts this year as he placed tied-for-15th after shooting a 5-over 74-75149. Sophomore Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga) and senior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) each tied-for-31st after carding 8-over 152s, and junior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.) was tied for 56 after shooting an 11-over 79-76155.

Senior Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) did not play to rest his back and should be back for the Golf World Invitational November 4-6 in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Jackets, which entered the tournament No. 1 in the Golfweek computer rankings, had their highest over-par finish of the year in three outings. Tech has now finished in the top five in nine out of 11 tournaments during the 1999 calendar year.
