AUSTIN, Texas – Led by a 4-under-par closing round of 68 by senior Troy Matteson, the Georgia Tech golf team improved its standing by six spots to finish in eighth at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament was contested at the par-72, 6,906-yard Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
Matteson, who began the day in a tie for 41st place, climbed the individual standings by carding a quartet of birdies on the day to fire his round of 4-under-par 34-34-68. That total put Matteson among four players tied for 17th place at 1-under-par 73-74-68-215 following the conclusion of play. His total was 13 shots off the pace of individual medalist Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, who blitzed the Austin Country Club layout for a closing round score of 7-under-par 65 to finish the event at 14-under-par 68-69-65-202.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets greatly improved their play on Tuesday, carding a round of 2-under-par 286. That allowed Tech to climb from 14th place after 36 holes to eighth place in the team standings, with its 9-over-par score of 297-290-286-873. The Jackets’ 54-hole score was 31 shots behind the pace of team champion Oklahoma State, which was steady throughout the event, finishing at 22-under-par 280-280-282-842.
Following Matteson in the individual standings was fellow senior Adam Cranford, who finished at 1-under-par over the final 36 holes of play, including a final-round 72 and was one of six players tied for 28th place at 2-over-par 75-71-72-218. Sophomore Chan Wongluekiet was the next Tech player in the field, finishing tied with two other players for 58th place at 79-70-75-224. Classmate Nicholas Thompson in 61st place followed him after his three-round score of 74-75-76-225. Freshman Thomas Jordan was the final member of the Yellow Jacket contingent, as he tied with three other players in 71st place with a score of 75-82-71-228.
