Tampa, Fla. – Freshman Anders Albertson fired a 5-under-par 67 in the afternoon round to put himself in contention for the individual title, and 11th-ranked Georgia Tech shot 4-under 284 to entrench itself in second place after 36 holes of the Gary Koch Invitational.

Tech has a 36-hole total of 573, 3-under-par, but fell 14 shots back of 17th-ranked North Florida, which grabbed the big lead with a 17-under-par score of 271 on the 7,389-yard Old Memorial Golf Club. The Ospreys received a 66 from Joey Petronio, a 67 from Kevin Phelan and a 68 from Sean Dale in the second round, and have a two-round score of 559.

No. 18 Virginia (+1) is in third place followed by No. 8 Alabama (+2) and No. 6 Auburn (+4). The 15-team field includes seven teams ranked in the nation’s top 25.

All-American James White and Richard Werenski each shot 1-under 71 in the afternoon, while Ollie Schniederjans added a 75. Bo Andrews, who shot 70 in the morning round, added a 77 in the afternoon.

“It was a very positive afternoon for us,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “We got off to a slow start on the scoring part of the course, and we really had to dig in over the last nine holes. We played five or six under par on the way home. We always have the goal of having the low score on the last day.”

Albertson, who shot 74 in the morning round, is tied for fifth place individually with three others at 3-under 141, three strokes behind Petronio (6-under 138). Phelan has second place alone at 139, while Dale and Alabama’s Hunter Hamrick are tied for third at 140. White is in a six-way tie for ninth place at 142.

Sunday’s final round begins at 7:45 a.m. Tech is paired with North Florida and Virginia and will tee off at 9:25 a.m.
