Jackets Fifth After First Round of Golfweek Preview

ATLANTA – Kevin Larsen shot a one-under-par 71 to pace Georgia Tech, and the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets’ golf team is in fifth place, 10 shots behind defending national champion Georgia, after one round of the Golfweek Preview Invitational in Sunriver, Ore.

Tech posted a team score of 294, six over par, Monday, getting a 73 from All-American Roberto Castro, and a 75 each from senior Mike Barbosa and freshman Cameron Tringale.

Larsen, a junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., is tied for sixth place individually, playing consistently Monday with two birdies in each side of the par-72, 7,671-yard Crosswater Golf Club. He is two shots off the lead of Andy Winings of Kentucky, Brian Harman of Georgia and Seung-hu Han of UNLV, who each shot 69.

Castro, a junior from Alpharetta, rallied from a slow start to play the second nine in two-under-par and is tied for 16th place individually. Tringale, playing in his first collegiate tournament, played the back nine (Tech’s first nine) in one-under-par but posted two bogeys and a double-bogey coming in.

The top-ranked Bulldogs have a six-shot lead in the team standings four-under-par 284. UNLV is in second place at 290, followed by Kentucky at 291, Arizona State at 292 and Tech.
