Norman, Okla. – Freshman Anders Albertson shot a 1-over-par 73 Saturday, but the rest of the Yellow Jackets had difficulty handling the extremely windy conditions, and 9th-ranked finished sixth at the NCAA Southwest Regional, nine strokes out of a qualifying finish for the NCAA Championship finals.
Scores skyrocketed across the board Saturday in winds that consistently blew 21 miles per hour and gusted to 31 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Third-seeded Washington and top-seeded Texas handled it better than the rest of the field, posting rounds of 293 (+5) and 292 (+4) for the day to finish 1-2 in the standings.
The 13th-ranked Huskies completed 54 holes in 4-under-par 860, while the Longhorns finished even-par 864. Florida State (+7), Illinois (+7) and host Oklahoma (+10) captured the other three qualifying spots.
The top five finishers in each of the six regional tournaments being contested this weekend advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 29 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The Yellow Jackets failed to advance for only the second time in 22 regional appearances dating back to 1989, bringing an end to their season.
Tech, the No. 2 seed, tumbled out of contention on the back nine, playing it 11 shots over par to finish the day at 19-over 307. The Yellow Jackets finished in sixth place at 19-over 883 after beginning the day in fifth at even par for the first two rounds.
Bo Andrews shot a 77, freshman Ollie Schniederjans a 78 and senior James White a 79 for Tech’s counting scores, while Richard Werenski carded an 80.
Chris Williams of Washington, one of the nation’s top amateur players, shot 68 Saturday and captured medalist honors by one shot over 36-hole leader Thomas Pieters of Illinois. Williams posted a three-round total of 7-under-par 209. Jonathan De Los Reye of St. Mary’s (218, +2) earned the regional’s individual qualifying spot on a playoff over San Diego’s Grant Forrest.
Schniederjans finished as the low Yellow Jacket at 3-over 219, tying for 15th place. White tied for 24th place at 222 (+6) and Albertson tied for 27th at 223 (+7). Andrews tied for 31st at 224 (+8).
