THE FLATS – Nicholas Thompson and Cameron Tringale both made the cut at last weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour, while Troy Matteson and Matt Weibring had solid weekends on the Web.com Tour.
Thompson grabbed everyone’s attention in the opening round by firing an 8-under-par 64 that included eight birdies and an eagle on the Torrey Pines North course. The 2005 Tech graduate wasn’t able to sustain the momentum, however, closing with rounds of 73-76-78 to tie for 53rd place at 3-over-par 291. Tringale tied for 69th at 295, while Bryce Molder and Stewart Cink missed the cut.
Molder is ranked 14th among the favorites at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am because of his three top-10 finishes and a tie for 12th in the last five tournaments there.
He joins Roberto Castro, playing in his first 2015 event, Chesson Hadley and Troy Matteson in the event.
Matteson (2-under 282) tied for 54th in the Colombia Championship Presented by Claro, while Matt Weibring (1-under 283) made his first cut and tied for 59th place. Richard Werenski missed the cut.
Larry Mize made his 2015 debut on the Champions Tour and tied for 51st 2-over 218) at the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.
