@GT_GOLF Duo Set for U.S. Amateur

Aug. 14, 2016

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech golfers James Clark and Luke Schniederjans are among 312 players who will begin two rounds of stroke play Monday in the 116th United States Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

A field of 312 players will play 18 holes of stroke play on Aug. 15 and 16, one round on each of the two qualifying courses (North and South), after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play on the South course. Six rounds of match play begin on Aug. 17 and the championship concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Aug. 21.

The Tech duo will attempt to become the first Yellow Jackets to claim the Havemeyer Trophy since Matt Kuchar in 1997 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Ill. The legendary Bobby Jones won the U.S. Amateur five times between 1924 and 1930.

Clark is a rising junior from Columbus, Ga., while Schniederjans, younger brother of three-time Tech All-American Ollie Schniederjans, is an incoming freshman from Powder Springs, Ga. This is the first appearance in the U.S. Amateur for each.

Clark made the U.S. Amateur field with a second-place finish at the sectional qualifier at Newnan (Ga.) Country Club. His top summer finish otherwise was a tie for sixth at the Eastern Amateur. Clark finished 17th at the Southeastern Amateur, tied for 30th at the Southern Amateur and tied for 37th at the Dogwood Invitational. At Tech, he has two top-10 finishes in 22 career events.

Schniederjans was the medalist (65-69) at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Atlanta. He reached the semifinals of match play in the Georgia State Amateur after tying for 11th in stroke play, and also played well in U.S. Open local (T-4) and sectional (T-11) qualifiers earlier this summer. He was Tech’s top finisher in the Dogwood Invitational (T-10).
