The Moccasins stand at 1-under 575 for 36 holes, two strokes ahead of the Volunteers (+1 577). South Carolina and first-round leader Alabama are tied at 7-over 585.

Griffin, who shot a 79 in Friday’s opening round and didn’t count for the Yellow Jackets, saw his second round begin in much the same way after he bogeyed his first three holes. But the junior from Wilson, N.C., eagled the 15th, his sixth hole of the round, and played his final 13 holes in 6-under-par.

Junior Paul Haley and freshman Bo Andrews each shot 1-over 73 for Tech Saturday, while sophomore Minghao Wang posted the Jackets’ fourth counting score with a 75.

Haley, who shot even-par 72 Friday, is in a group of five golfers tied for 14th place at 1-over 145, eight strokes behind individual leader Russell Henley of Georgia, who fired a 6-under-par 66 Saturday and has a 36-hole total of 7-under 137. He has a two-stroke lead on teammate Harris English and first-round leader Jonathan Randolph of Mississippi.
