Golfers Tie for Sixth in Las Vegas

ATLANTA – Roberto Castro fired a three-under-par 69, and Chan Wongluekiet shot a one-under 71 to pace Georgia Tech in the final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, and the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets finished in a tie for sixth place with UCLA.

Tech shot a six-over-par 294 on Sunday at the Southern Highlands Golf Club (7,381 Yards, par 72), but the Jackets still moved up two spots from its 36-hole standing. Tech finished 23 shots off the pace of Arizona State, which shot 293 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 848 (16 under par) and a two-shot victory over Florida (292 – 850).

Clemson was third at five-under-par 859 (288 Saturday), followed by Georgia (one-under 863) and Washington (870). Tech and UCLA each finished with a tournament total of 871 (seven over par). Eleven of the 15 teams are ranked among the nation’s top 20 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

Florida’s Camilo Villegas took the individual title by shooting 69 Sunday to finish at 11-under-par 205, one shot ahead of Wake Forest’s Bill Haas (71 – 206). Twenty-one golfers finished at par of better for 54 holes.

Wongluekiet, a junior from Bradenton, Fla., tied for 11th with two other golfers at four-under-par 212. Castro, a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., finished in a tie for 24th at 218 (+2) along with junior Nicholas Thompson, who posted a 77 Sunday.

Mike Barbosa, also shooting a 77 Sunday, tied for 52nd at 226 (+10) and Kevin Larsen finished 70th at 233 after carding an 80 Saturday.
